My name is Li Pan, and I come from the 2019 grade five-year clinical medicine major of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, Fujian Medical University. This summer, I signed up through the school to participate in the Yale University online exchange program in the summer of 2021, and participated in the study of public health and remote scientific research projects. I wanted to use this opportunity to improve my ability to write medical English papers and prepare for future scientific research.
At first, I heard that the entire project must be taught in English. Considering the particularity and complexity of medical English, I was a little worried that my English listening and speaking skills were not enough to support a smooth project learning. However, after participating in the small pre-project class meeting, I felt that I was about to participate in such an atmosphere of learning journey, which strengthened my determination to become better.
The public health and medical remote scientific research project is taught by a well-known professor from Yale University, and there are also an excellent doctoral assistant to analyze the content of the courses taught by the professor, assist in the writing of scientific research reports, and provide suggestions for report revisions to maximize In a short time that we could experience the academic characteristics of Yale University, enhance our knowledge reserves, professional skills and scientific research capabilities, and enhance our personal academic background.
In these six weeks, we learned the key concepts, brief history and latest developments of epidemiology and clinical trials, correlation and causation, problem analysis in epidemiology and clinical trials, key concepts of data and experimental design, hypothesis testing and regression analysis, survival data analysis, epidemiological cohort (tracing) research analysis, exploratory analysis (data collation and graphical presentation), case hypothesis testing, regression analysis, epidemiological retrospective research analysis, clinical trial design and analysis , early clinical trials, phase III clinical trial design, analysis and key considerations, development trends of epidemiological research, omics and imaging data analysis, electronic health data recording, learned R language through tutorial classes, and after class I read the literature and experienced the use of the course software R and R Studio. Professor Ma who taught this course is very excellent. He comes from the Department of Biostatistics, School of Public Health, Yale University. He proposed and developed a number of new methods for high-dimensional data dimensionality reduction and variable selection, and studied the applications of these methods in bioinformatics, genomics, and epidemiology. This method is of great significance for the identification of cancer and psychiatric disease genes and the selection of treatment methods, and has been practically applied in cancer genomics, cardiovascular diseases, and mental disorders. He has published more than 100 papers in English journals, among which more than 30 papers have been published in top international journals such as Annalsofstatistics, Biometrka, Biostatistics, Nature Genetics, and some of the papers have been cited more than 500 times. His courses have benefited me a lot
During the six-week course, I was learning English while acquiring medical knowledge in medical statistics and epidemiology. At first, facing the screen full of unfamiliar medical English words, I felt a little uncomfortable. It often took twice as long as the class time of me to understand what the professor was teaching, so I searched for the unfamiliar English words one by one, slowly realizing the process of gradually internalizing knowledge. We used the online platform to preview, review, submit homework, and communicate in forums. Before class, I would watch the PPT and reading materials released by the professor for preview. When I encountered problems in the live broadcast class and could not keep up with the pace of the lecture, I would watch the recording and broadcasting on the platform repeatedly after class to deepen my understanding of knowledge. Apart from that, every week, we would complete a retrospective questionnaire to test our learning effect during the week. At the same time, we could ask the professor and teaching assistant questions for their questions. After six weeks of study, and after earnestly completing the literature reading assignments and reports assigned by the professor, I found that I had expanded the reserve of medical English words and improved my ability to translate and read medical articles and papers. At the same time, in the process of preparing and conducting group PPT presentations, my oral English and presentation skills have also been improved, and because of group cooperation, I have met many outstanding young partners from universities across the country and improved teamwork skills. At the same time, I also gained valuable friendship.
Due to the special reasons of the epidemic, we were unable to go offline to school for physical learning and research, but through this online project, I also gained the wealth of medical knowledge, improved my English level, and felt the happiness of group learning. This special learning experience will surely become a precious memory and be sealed in my memory.
